The Safety Revolution - Composite Racing Seats

In the pursuit of speed, safety is often a secondary thought; however a revolution is starting in the States and its safety conscience! It was started by Tim Tindles horrific Pro Mod crash in 2013 which highlighted the safety components that undoubtedly saved his life.

 

 

“We have to take our hats off to Tim McAmis, our chassis builder, and all the safety manufacturers who provide us with equipment that does exactly what it is supposed to do in worst-case scenarios such as this,” said Tindles team owner Danny Rowe. “Personally, I can’t say enough as to the job that all the safety equipment did in keeping Tim safe. We are all very thankful that he’s going to be fine and back racing with us again soon.

Tim McAmis On Racetech Seats

 Tim McAmis Race Cars uses Racetech Seats exclusively in all the cars they build, believing them to be the safest seat available on the market through their own testing.

“Because the Racetech unit is one piece, it provides full body support” says McAmis. "It also has a built-in lateral head and hip supports as well as SFI/FIA approved memory foam. The Carbon/Kevlar construction is exceptionally strong and helps protect the driver from flying debris. Due to these benefits and proven track record, Racetech is the only seat that we recommend to customers having a car built in-house at TMRC.”

 

 This has lead to Dragzine’s own project build opting for a Racetech composite seat replacing the Aluminium variant which offers very little impact absorption. The drag racing community is starting to realize the inherent benefits of a Racetech carbon-fiber/Kevlar seats as technology advances in suspension and engine performance and vehicles become quicker and faster, so does the need for advanced race safety.

Racetech Series - 199 Carbon/Kevlar

Dragzine have incorporated our Racetech series-119 seat which meets the FIA 8855-1999 specifications. The shell of a series-119 fiberglass composite seat weighs 16.8 pounds (7.6kgs) and the carbon-fiber variant weighs in at a feather-light 9.7 pounds (4.3kgs).

 The 199 series also features a unique back mount fixing position to the rollcage, by mounting the seat to the floor and at the mid-point of the roll cage, the lateral movement of the seat is limited dramatically by the roll cage. When combined with the kevlar/carbon fiber construction of the Racetech seats, the seat and driver are able to withstand a crash test of over 82g’s as tested using NASCAR’s frontal and angled-side crash testing methods, without damage to the seat or driver.

Dragzine’s Joshua Vanwhnsberghe added “When driving at speeds approaching 200mph, the last thing you want to question is the safety of your racecar and equipment. Luckily, we won’t have to question the safety of our racecar since we are using the best safety equipment available. With the addition of the 25.3 certified chassis, funny car cage and Racetech composite seat, our Blown Z drag radial car will be ready to break records again in 2014.”
