Lanan Do The Double In F3 Cup
Lanan Racing with Red Line Synthetic Oil have made their intentions clear early on in the F3 Cup season. Toby Sowery stormed to pole on his F3 Cup debut at Snetterton, nearly one second clear of his nearest challengers and taking the win in both races.
All eyes were on poleman Sowery in the first race. The karting graduate was quickly up to speed and a great start wasn't enough for Tristan Cliffe to stop Toby Sowery's charge in the opening race of 2014.
The Lanan Racing youngster controlled round two at Snetterton and the extra points awarded for pole in race one and fastest lap in race two means the karting graduate leaves Norfolk with maximum points.
"It's been miles better than I ever thought it would." he said. "I couldn't have asked for a better weekend. Two wins and a pole, it's the perfect weekend for us especially as it's the first weekend. It's great to be racing in F3 and I've definitely learnt a lot racing against these guys."
Round two saw Sowery enter turn one on his own, rather than wheel-to-wheel with Cliffe as in race one. A good start for Sowery coupled with wheelspin for Cliffe gave the 17-year-old the perfect platform, but a safety car scuppered his lead-building exercise.
"We got a really good start this time, I'm not sure about Tristan but we definitely got away a bit.
"When the safety car came out obviously everyone caught up. It was our first ever one and clearly it wasn't that good. It was close between me and Tristan but I made a bit of a gap and eked it out from then on."
Sowery became the first driver to stop Cliffe from taking home the IWI Watches Fastest Lap Award since the second round of 2013 when Powell set the best race lap of the weekend. Tricky conditions denied Sowery the chance of improving on his race one flyer, taking with it the prospect of a new F3 Cup lap record.
A trip to Silverstone and the Grand Prix circuit is next for Sowery and F3 Cup, and he's hopeful of taking his dominant form with him.
"We did a test at Silverstone recently so we're ready for the next round. We hope to keep this form up but you never what might happen."
